EVENT

Energy Boat Challenge

Organised in July by the Yacht Club de Monaco, in collaboration with the International Powerboating Federation (UIM) and Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge is unique in the world, the goal being a sustainable future through renewable energy.

The MCEBC is an international challenge open to the public, that welcomes students and professionals from across the world to race in three different classes: Energy, Solar and Open Sea Class.

Join us for an epic week of racing, innovation and networking. Our event aims to create a platform where open source information sharing is the focus, creating a bridge between the engineers of tomorrow and the industry leaders of today. The time for words has long passed, it is now time for action. You will be able to see how different teams implement a variety of renewable energies and propulsion systems to create vessels with long lasting autonomy and blazing top speeds.

∇ TECH TALKS

Keen as ever to encourage information exchange, all participants have a chance to pitch their project during daily Tech Talks that are open to the public.

∇ ONE CHALLENGE, 3 CLASSES

SOLAR CLASS: Still in its firmament

Competing at every edition since the first one held in 2014, boats in the Solar Class will be involved in match racing, slalom and endurance races.

OPEN SEA CLASS: Testing actual performance of boats

This class, formerly known as the Offshore Class and mainly open to vessels already on the market or about to enter it, includes a 16 nautical mile coastal course to Ventimiglia in Italy from Monaco, a distance of 16nm (29.6km). An endurance race will also be organised to test the boats’ range. It will be a real test for green-energy propelled boats that are already being marketed or are in development.

ENERGY CLASS: Building the future of propulsion

In the Energy Class, introduced in 2018 by the YCM — which supplies each team with the  same hull design — the challenge for students, working with industry partners, is to design the most powerful and durable propulsion system using a clean energy source of their choice, from a given quantity of energy. A laboratory of innovation, many and varied avenues have been pursued since its launch, from fuel cells to recovering heat to improve efficiency, and artificial intelligence.

In 2020, online presentations revealed that a lot of thought had also gone into cockpit design.

∇ PADDOCKS

A hive of activity during the event, the paddocks are open to the public to come and discover what the teams are doing. Visitors can see the solar panels, motors and foils, and talk to participants.

∇ EXHIBITORS

In 2021, the YCM will again be ready to welcome prototypes, start-ups and innovative projects based on new energy sources in the yachting sector in the exhibitors village at the heart of the boat paddocks.

∇ CONFERENCE DAY – 8 JULY 2021

This one-day conference is an opportunity for experts to delve deeper into topics such as clean energy alternatives and newbuild-design efficiency, and to discuss latest research findings in the sector.
